WWOOFing

Willing Workers On Organic Farms (WWOOF)

This Sustainable House currently has an active WWOOFing program allowing visitors to be a part of the property. WWOOFing is a form of cultural exchange in which WWOOFers live and work as family with host farms. The basic deal is that in return for board and lodgings, and a novel experience I would expect, WWOOFers put in 4-6 hours work each day. It can be a very rewarding adventure and offer the opportunity to learn some new skills and meet some new people. Previous WWOOFers at TSH have;

  • Helped build new gardens learning about the principles involved in soil building;
  • Helped with the construction of new animal facilities (chickens and cattle);
  • Learnt about aspects of animal husbandry by doing the tasks;
  • Done a basic bricklaying course (see the blog elsewhere on the site);
  • Visited the local country show and a regional poultry auction;
  • And got in some free time to check out Canberra and the surrounds.

For the future, there are plans to setup a micro-diary (1-2 cows) along with some cheese and yoghurt making… Yum!

TSH also has a program allowing long-stay WWOOFers (min 7 week commitment) to complete a Permaculture Design Certificate during their time here. This involves completing a series of modules, which are set-up for distance learning, along with discussions, tutorials and practical applications. This is a great way to gain new qualifications which are recognised, and in demand, worldwide.

Note: TSH only has limited facilities for WWOOFers to stay, and is therefore extremely careful about ‘mixing’ WWOOFer visits. This is especially the case when we have single females staying in the accomodation (for their own safety). As a result it is not always possible to accept all WWOOFers at all times. All serious enquries will receive a response but no guarantees are given with regards availability of WWOOFing spaces.
